Travel Impressions honored its top performing agencies and consortia partners at its 16th annual “Best of the Best” gala event, held last month at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach in Cancún, Mexico.

“Best of the Best” honors are bestowed on a limited number of agencies that are top producers for Travel Impressions, and that are considered to be its best partners. Representatives from Travel Impressions’ supplier partners also participated in the four days of festivities.

Travel agents enjoyed sponsored events and activities including a welcome dinner hosted by the Cancún Convention & Visitors Bureau and Riviera Maya Destination Marketing Office, a dinner reception on the second evening sponsored by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, and the gala cocktail reception hosted by the Mexico Tourism Board.

Where did you land and what was your first impression of Hawaii?
We arrived on Oahu at the Honolulu International Airport and were immediately welcomed with a fresh flower lei greeting, whose aroma relaxed me to my core. Throughout all my travels to Hawaii, no matter what island I land on, there is always a warm and welcoming feeling by the local people. They are glad visitors choose to visit their home and hope they have a wonderful experience throughout their stay.

Describe the hotels that you stayed in during your visit.

The first hotel that I stayed in was the new Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa on Oahu, which opened at the end of August. Disney has taken great care to bring the Hawaiian culture into every aspect of the property. However, there are still the magical Disney touches throughout the property as well. If you have children, a visit to Aunty’s Beach House (the kids club) is a must!

The second hotel I stayed in was Outrigger Luana Waikiki. In my previous trips I never had experienced a condo property before, and this was a great experience for me!  It was wonderful to have the option to purchase food/drinks and be able to prepare them in my room. It was also great to be able to store/re-heat leftovers as Waikiki has some fantastic dining options!

The final hotel I visited was Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, which exceeds my expectations every time I visit! The staff is always very friendly and accommodating.

How would you describe the grounds of the region?
In Hawaii, you can experience lush green mountains and then the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.  You can even see snow on the top of Mauna Kea.

What was your overall travel experience like?
Hawaii provides a very unique experience. The islands are so rich in culture and history, and each island has its very own charm that gives you a reason to fall in love them!  No two trips are the same as there is so much to experience and I truly feel there is something for everyone!

What is one thing that shouldn’t be missed for anyone who travels to Hawaii?
It is very hard to pick just one thing not to miss since each island has something very unique to offer. Oahu has the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the famous Waikiki Beach. Kauai has the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” – Waimea Canyon. Hawaii Island, also known as Kona, has the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Maui has the road to Hana and Haleakala National Park. Also, not to be forgotten, each island offers a variety of luaus!

If you had to use three words to describe Hawaii, which words would you use?
Unfortunately I am not able to give just three words.  But here is one word for each of the major islands:

Maui – captivating
Oahu – energizing
Kauai – rejuvenating
Hawaii Island – inspiring

Tuscany is made up of several areas. The capital of Tuscany is Florence which seems to be everyone’s favorite city. There are enough attractions between the world class shopping, a unique blend of different Tuscan style restaurants, and some of the world’s most famous museums and art collections to keep one occupied for a lifetime, but it is small enough (almost an intimate quality) to be managed in a couple of days.

Just South of Florence are the areas of Chianti, and Chianti Classico. The area is characterized by rolling hills that are dotted with olive trees and vineyards galore. Picture the label of a bottle of extra virgin olive oil and you will start to get the picture. There are countless ancient villages to explore. Many of the medieval towns are perched high on hilltops literally carved out of the mountains. Within the walls of these towns and cities are labyrinths of streets filled with history. There is also a wonderful selection of typical restaurants, and shops selling beautiful handcrafted Tuscan collectibles to bring home. Radda, Greve, Castellina, Ponzano, and Gaiole in Chianti are just some of the places to visit during a visit to Chianti Classico. To the East of the motorway that connects Florence with Sienna are the towns of San Miniato, Montaione, San Gimignano, and Volterra. A little further to the South is the medieval walled city of Sienna which guards the southern border of Tuscany.

Midway between Florence and Pisa is the medieval city of Lucca – which some call the gastronomic center of Tuscany. The walled city lies 45 minutes from Florence, and 30 minutes from the sea, and provides a great location to enjoy much of what Tuscany has to offer.

The walls of the city can actually be walked on, and provide a wonderful promenade to view the city. Joggers, tourists, young mothers strolling with their babies, Italian businessmen out for post lunch constitutionals all walk side by side, enjoying the sites of the ancient town. Inside the walls you will find shops, churches and most of the requisite attractions for sightseeing, but you will also find what many considered be the best restaurants in all of Italy. In fact, the gastronomic delights of Lucca have been featured in the New York Times Travel Section.

Within 15 minutes South of the walled city we offer a wonderful selection of rental properties that are suitable for relaxing holidays, family vacations, muti-generational reunions, and some of the properties even make a wonderful venue for a destination wedding. They are all located in the village of Vorno.

The Coselli Estate is comprised of 4 villas are on one estate; perfect for weddings and family gatherings. Together they can accommodate up to 64 guests.

Villa de Fattore; Villa Controni; Casa Matteuci; Casa Frantoia

Very near to The Coselli Estate is Borgo Bernadini a 12 bedroom Tuscan mansion. This is the type of villa that is suitable for large gatherings of friends, family reunions, weddings, multi-generational reunions, or corporate retreat.

We visited two other villas that are in this same area that are owned by a personal friend. Villa Bosciglia is a 17^th century villa that is completely renovated. Casale Sodini is a renovated Italian farmhouse; walking distance to the village of Vorno.

Also in Vorno we visited the Villa Lucia Estate available as a 9 bedroom villa or 15 bedroom with the addition of the 6 bedroom annex. The main structure of the villa can be dated back to the year 500. An added benefit is that it is located walking distance from the village.

Just north of Lucca we visited some other fabulous villas. The Little Hamlet or Il Borgino is actually 3 separate villas with a common pool. The owners live in a separate villa on the property and offer several extra services such as chef service, cooking classes or wine tasting. This is a great choice for a large group of friends. The best views imaginable.

Also on the North side of Lucca is Novedieci a ten bedroom farmhouse, which has a 300 year old church on the property. In this same area we visited Cassale dell Olivio a 5 bedroom luxury villa with ultimate privacy. This villa is quite special and can be recommended to our best clients. The last villa that we visited in this area is unique in its own way. A 5 bedroom farmhouse, it has an extra bedroom carved out of the attic for a teen. It is located next to the village church and obviously is walking distance to the village. It is called Tre Cancelli Farmhouse.

Going East from Lucca on the A12 Autostrada you arrive in Pisa and the seashore in about 30 minutes. Although Pisa is most famous for the iconic ‘Leaning Tower’, there are also the seashore towns of Viareggio and Forte dei Marme which are fabulous attractions. Cafes, bars, restaurants, curio dealers, souvenir shops, and beach clubs line the picturesque boulevard that runs along the sea. Both of these towns are great for strolling along the promenade, and watching typical Italian life pass by. The town of Forte dei Marme also has a very upscale town center with some of the finest shops in the world including Gucci, Guess, Dolce & Gabana, Armani, Ferragamo, and Fendi. The town square provides wonderful setting for an afternoon cappuccino and biscotti in one of the many cafes that form the boundaries of the Palm tree lined square.

Approx 50 miles to the South of Lucca is the village of Montaione – a perfect location in Tuscany for touring. It is located in the area between Florence and Sienna. It is here we find the Fattoria Santo Stefano Estate. There several separate large villas on the estate. Each of the villas is completely renovated and up to date, and all are air-conditioned…a rarity in Italy. There are actually 8 separate large villas + a small complex of 2-3 bedroom townhouses. In all the Estate can handle over 150 guests; ideal for weddings and corporate meetings. The names of the villas are:

Cerretello, Vignola, Le Cachine, Santa Virginia, Pupillo, Tabaccia, Piagetta and The Lakes. Borgo la Casa is an old farmhouse that has been converted into 11 separate apartments with a common pool. These apartments are ideal for clients needing less than a week. They are also ideal for couples or small families.

South and East of Montaione is the heart of Chianti. We have a great selection of villas in the towns that make up Chianti many of which are restored farmhouses. Just outside of the towns of Monteriggionio and Casole d’Elsa lies the Castello di Casole. The Castello is a 4,200 acre estate with 7 independent ultra luxury villas. The centerpiece of the estate is a 5 star hotel that is opening in spring 2012. The villas are stunning! Here is one example: Castello di Casole

Besides seeing all of these villas we also enjoyed some activities that our clients will LOVE!!! We have the resources to create the most memorable experiences for our customers. Wine tasting, truffle hunting, olive oil tasting, cooking demonstrations are just a few activities that we can organize. As for the food…it’s difficult to even begin to describe the eating experiences that we had. The pizza, twenty different kinds of pasta, the wine, even the simple sandwiches (Panini) were experiential. A first time Tuscany villa customer is our repeat customer of the future.

Something that I found really interesting about Fiji is that it is situated on the International Date Line (on the 180 degree meridian). This means that it is one of the first places in the world to welcome in a new day. On Taveuni Island, there is a particular spot where a person can have one foot in the current day and another in the day before! Another really interesting place to visit is Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, which harbors a large rainforest and a number of walking tours that involve cultural and natural sites. In the Pacific Harbour region of Fiji (the southern part of Viti Levu), fire walking is a major attraction. The Arts Village there has daily performances of Fire Walking four times a week! Over the years, the tropical islands of Fiji have become a popular travel destination. Honeymooners, divers, families, sports enthusiasts, mountain climbers, and more venture to this coveted destination. The beauty of Fiji is only part of the appeal to its visitors.  Fiji also has a fascinating mix of cultures, its people have a welcoming nature that is hard to find anywhere else, and the country’s rugby team is one of the finest in the world! One of my colleagues recently has visited this tropical wonder. Read more to see what she had to say about it.

How did feel did you get when you first stepped off the plane?
I had finally arrived in Fiji on the island of Viti Levu, at Nadi International Airport.  I did not know what to expect of the destination – the airport was bustling with activity and everyone was friendly and anxious to assist.  This was a quality I found throughout my stay. The Fijian people will captivate your heart. When you arrive, Fijians say “Bula”, this means “Hello, Welcome.” As I cleared Customs and Immigration, it occurred to me that it was Tuesday morning.  I was fascinated with the fact that I had left Los Angeles on Sunday evening. The flight took 10 hours, and because we crossed the International dateline, we had lost two days.

How would you describe the grounds of the region?
The vegetation is lush! Fiji has a tropical climate – Summer begins early in December and lasts until April. During this time it is hot and humid. The cooler months are from May to October.  There is an abundance of flowers, plants and fruit trees, and to some extent, it reminded me of the Caribbean. Fiji consists of 330 islands, of which around 100 are inhabited. The largest island and population centre is Viti Levu, followed by Vanua Levu.  The four largest islands, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu are surrounded by coral reefs and have mountains located in the central region of each island which cover a large portion of the land mass.

Fiji’s main island, where Nadi airport is located, is Viti Levu where you will find Denerau Island, home of many wonderful resorts. From there you can drive south along the coastline to the Coral Coast where you will find another batch of fabulous resorts. To the west of Viti Levu are the outer islands of the Mamanucas, with beautiful golden beaches and fantastic diving. These islands are easily reached from Nadi and can be combined with a stay on the mainland.  Past the Coral Coast is the area known as Pacific Harbour, which has its own internationally designed golf course, Cultural Centre and offers a plethora of great underwater sites. From there you are able to depart for Davui Island for a stay at the Royal Davui Resort, a luxurious escape.  Finally, in the northwest, the islands of the Yasawa Group offer amazing cave dives.  Vanua Levu, the second largest island, is located in the north and about an hour from Nadi.  Savusavu is the main town and it reminded me of Oahu, Hawaii – the terrain is mountainous, with lots of cliffs overhanging into the ocean and lots of adventurous activities!

Describe the hotels you stayed in during your visit:

Radisson Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island
Located on the beachfront on Denarau Island, this hotel was a very nice introduction to Fiji. The Radisson has spacious guestrooms and villa suites all of which are decorated with a blend of contemporary style with a flavor of the Fijian culture.  There are five lagoon swimming pools, a spa, tennis courts and scuba diving as well as an 18-hole championship golf course.  The resort is within walking distance of Port Denarau Harbor where catamarans depart daily for other islands – which allows visitors to easily plan day trips to take in the outer islands.

Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Malolo Island
As I approached this resort from the water it looked like an ancient village. The focal point of the resort is a magnificent building in the design of a Fijian canoe house surrounded by sprawling ceilings of hand-woven thatch and an exotic mix of natural materials and modern elements.  Once checked in, I had the feeling of being submerged in the richness of an ancient culture with vibrant present-day lifestyle touches. This is a fantastic property, featuring 46 bures (bungalows) – ten of which are suspended over the magnificent lagoon.  I arrived there by boat, but helicopters are also available from the mainland. This was my favorite resort – I found it very secluded, peaceful and luxurious. Definitely a place for romance!

Castaway Island Resort, Castaway Island

This resort is one of the most popular Fijian resorts, is located in the Mamanuca group of islands and offers something for everyone – a pristine private island environment, perfect for couples or families with children and friends.  The island is surrounded by white sand beaches and vibrant coral reefs, and offers a great range of activities and creative island cuisine. Activities include snorkeling, diving, catamarans, kayaks, windsurfers, parasailing, hand line fishing, speedboats, champagne island hops and more. Known as “The Jewel of the South Pacific,” Castaway Island is very intriguing.  The island is also the place that Tom Hanks filmed the movie Castaway.

Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Denarau Island
This hotel was my anchor while in Fiji. I would describe it as a property with subtle sophistication and laidback luxury.  The hotel has a mix of French influences with exotic Fijian customs. It blends tradition with the most modern technologies located on a private waterfront location and has the Pacific’s largest lagoon-style pool.  The Sofitel’s rooms are decorated in Fijian style and each has a private balcony or terrace. World-class dining, a sublime International Day Spa, a stunning beachfront chapel and an unsurpassed range of activities make for a very enjoyable experience.

Shangri-La Fijian Resort, Yanuca Island, Coral Coast.

This resort is located on the private Yanuca Island with 109 acres dedicated to the resort.  It’s surrounded by pristine white beaches, turquoise lagoons, and swaying palm trees.  The island is conveniently connected to the mainland by a causeway bridge. This resort features a layout that draws inspiration from contemporary Fijian themes. The rooms were recently refurbished and are large and modern in design with earthy colors and soft lighting which give the feeling of the South Pacific. The resort boasts a par 32 9-hole executive golf course designed by Peter Thomson, a gymnasium, three freshwater swimming pools, a children’s paddling pool at the lagoon, beach massage bure, game room, scuba diving, jet skiing, parasailing, bike hire and more.  They also specialize in weddings – with a beautiful non-denominational seaside wedding chapel which is set near the water’s edge in a very intimate and secluded setting near the seventh golf green. The chapel is decorated with a raised platform, tall vases cascading with fragrant tropical blooms, as well as a glass wall and ceiling so the bride and groom have beautiful views of the reef and the Pacific Ocean.

Outrigger on the Lagoon Resort – Viti Levu, Coral Coast
Outrigger on the Lagoon is one of the most enchanting resorts in the South Pacific.  It is a very large resort spanning 40 acres on a calm beachfront on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu island and embraces the design and hospitality of a traditional Fijian village.  Modern air-conditioned hotel rooms and bures (bungalows) are beautifully furnished. The thatched bures feature vaulted ceilings lined with exquisite hand-painted masi bark cloth. The hotel’s signature Talai service, traditional butler service with a South Pacific twist, is available to guests staying in Deluxe Ocean View rooms, suites and bures. Talai service includes complimentary arrival drinks and champagne with canapés delivered to the room every afternoon. Talai butlers are available to unpack and press guests’ clothing, recommend tours and activities, and schedule restaurant reservations.  The resort is suitable for family vacations with an impressive tropical swimming pool, supervised children’s activities, Meimei nanny service, and kids-eat-free program.  It is also a perfect location for a destination wedding and honeymoon.

Royal Davui Resort, Davui Island
This was the highlight of my trip – “a must see and experience” – a once in a lifetime kind of a place!

How would you describe your overall travel experience?
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was pleased I had done Fiji as a stand-alone destination rather than coupling it with Australia and/or New Zealand which is customary.  There are so many islands I did not get to visit and would have loved to, so I’m already thinking of how I can get back there!

What is one thing that shouldn’t be missed for anyone who travels to Fiji?
There are lots of “must sees” depending on personal preferences; for divers, the area has some of the most spectacular snorkeling and dive sites.  For myself however, it would be a stay at the Royal Davui resort, on Davui Island!  This is the most remote place I have stayed at. The resort is located south of Fiji’s main island, and I got there via boat. Also available is a 25-minute flight and a 30-minute boat ride to reach Royal Davui Private Island. The resort consists of 16 exquisite vales (suites) each with a private pool and stunning ocean views located just steps from the turquoise sea. The island is a lush tropical garden with a single resort – they allow no more than 32 guests on the island at any one time, so guests are absolutely guaranteed privacy, serenity, peacefulness and ultimate relaxation.  I am told that Oprah stayed there while visiting Fiji – very exclusive, but understated!

London is a large city with many attractions and is filled with fashion, royalty, and history. The “Tube” is London’s underground railway system and was the first one built in the world! If you’ve visited London, you probably have been on the tube. Some must-see attractions are the Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London and its crown jewels, and the royal palaces of Kensington and Buckingham to name a few. Also, for those that love art, the National Gallery of London and the Tate Modern are must-sees. For those fashionistas out there, you can enjoy the famous Harrod’s Department Store as well as the boutiques along Oxford Street.

The London Eye is another attraction that shouldn’t be missed. It’s the tallest observation wheel in the world and each rotation takes about thirty minutes! At the very top of the wheel, you can see a beautiful view of the entire city! A colleague of mine recently visited London and had a great time. Read more to find out about her royal adventure.

If you had a chance to tell the world what you saw, what would you say?
I saw the history, fashion, art, and culture of London. I heard a discussion in Parliament, saw the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, saw Westminister Palace and the Westminster Abbey, and took walks along the English channel. I went shopping at Harrod’s and viewed beautiful art in the Tate Modern and drank tea the British way, with my pinky in the air.

What was the most extraordinary part of your trip?
I really enjoyed seeing Windsor Castle as well as Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guards. I also got to hear a discussion about the Israeli armed forces in Parliament which was very interesting. I compared their way of discussing world politics with how the U.S. House of Representatives conducts their discussions. The Tate Modern Museum and the Shakespeare Museum were two other favorites of mine as well as the Westminster Abbey. The city of London is such a beautiful old city.

How was the food?
The food in London was very good. There were a lot of options for all different kinds of cuisines. However, English pub food such as fish and chips seemed to be the most popular. I really enjoyed it! They also had many little cafés that were delicious as well.

What was the most meaningful part of your trip?
The reason why I went on this trip was to visit my friend who was studying abroad for a semester. My other friend and I went to London together. It was great exploring a whole new place in the world with two of my best friends.

What is one thing that shouldn’t be missed for anyone who travels to London?
The changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace was so interesting to see. Even though it was really crowded and at times hard to see, if you can get there early enough to get a good spot, it is a must-see!
