Everything and then some. Find it all in Argentina.

January 12, 2010

Like many of you, my new year’s resolution is to travel more. There are just so many amazing destinations in the world and in my blog this past year; I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the places I want to go. One region which has always held a certain kind of mystery for me is South America, and specifically of interest is Argentina. It has always been in my top ten destinations to visit because of its gorgeous landscapes, fascinating cities and lively culture.

A special reason why I’d like to visit this year is that in 2010 Argentina will celebrate its bicentennial, rejoicing in 200 years of independence from Spain. You can expect to visit several newly renovated museums and buildings, such as the famous Teatro Colón opera house in Buenos Aires. The resident travel experts tell me that now is the time to take my tango shoes out of the closet and hop on the plane to explore this amazing country.

Argentina stretches from Bolivia to the very bottom of South America, encompasses a wide array of geography and climates, and is almost the size of India. Nature-lovers can navigate the Patagonian steppe, climb South America’s tallest peak, walk among thousands of penguins and witness some of the world’s most amazing natural wonders. No visit to Argentina would be complete without witnessing the mighty roar and drenching mist of South America‘s greatest spectacle, the Iguazú Falls. Hikers can sample the stunning scenery of the lush Lake District – with its glorious lakes and white-tipped mountains – and revel in Patagonia’s glacier-carved landscapes and painted Andean deserts. Make sure to ski or snowboard while in the Lake District, its scenery and trails are breathtaking. A visit to Parque Provincial Ischigualasto is another must! Here you can take in the mind-bending rock formations and see dinosaur fossils from the Triassic Era.

Cosmopolitan travelers will adore fabulous Buenos Aires, full of opportunities to practice speaking Spanish with beautiful porteños (Buenos Aires locals), watch fútbol (soccer) and learn to dance the sexy tango. You can go shopping for designer clothes at affordable prices and eat the world’s best steaks every day while enjoying the nightlife until the sun comes up again. In Córdoba you can treat yourself to galleries galore, fine dining and stunning colonial architecture. I also suggest visting Chos Malal where you can explore volcanoes and hot spring geysers before heading up Ruta 40 to Mendoza – the city in Argentina I look forward to seeing most. With amazing wine tours, a hopping nightlife and some seriously big mountains – what more could you ask for?

Argentina is safe, friendly and – compared to the US or Europe – pretty affordable. Now is the time to visit, so get your hiking gear together and prepare for an unforgettable adventure to one of the planet’s most stunningly diverse locales!
