Hawaii is Chock Full O’ Aloha Spirit

July 17, 2009

“The fresh, floral air energizes you. The warm, tranquil waters refresh you. The breathtaking, natural beauty renews you.” At least that’s how the Hawaii Tourist Board describes a vacation experience on one of their six unique islands. Not surprisingly, that’s also what I’ve been hearing from all my internal Hawaii experts. So I’m taking my latest journey without ever leaving my desk to Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai and Lanai.

Hawaii can take pride in being home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes and the world’s tallest sea mountain. It is the birthplace of surfing and the hula. It is the former seat of a royal kingdom, one of the youngest geological formations in the world and the youngest state of the union. But perhaps Hawaii’s most unique feature is its Aloha Spirit: the warmth of the people of Hawaii that wonderfully complements the Islands’ perfect temperatures. Couple that with gentle trade wind breezes and a population of only 1.2 million people and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect vacation away from it all.

One of the biggest misconceptions people seem to have about Hawaii is that it is solely a place for honeymooners. While it is an ideal honeymoon destination, families, couples and groups can all equally enjoy the splendors of the six distinct islands. All of the islands offer up natural beauty, both upscale and value-priced lodging, cultural activities and exciting recreation.

While in Kauai, visitors can see the see the massive Waimea Canyon, “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, explore the golden sand beaches of the Coconut Coast or take a boat ride to the romantic towering cliffs of the Napali Coast. On Oahu, you can see pro surfers take on the big winter waves of the famous North Shore or learn about American history at Pearl Harbor. Thrill seekers can even learn to surf on the legendary Waikiki Beach.

You’ll feel like a real local when you visit Molokai, where almost half of the population is of native Hawaiian ancestry. With stunning natural plant life in the Halawa Valley, this island is a hiker’s dream. In Lanai, you can experience a true island getaway perfect for luxury, romance, and privacy away from crowds. You can golf, go off-roading or visit the Keahiakawelo, or “The Garden of the Gods” and view the extraordinary rock formations.

In Maui, the second largest island, some believe you will see the best beaches in the world. You’ll also witness Humpback whales migrating off shore every winter.  I suggest catching the sunrise atop Haleakala Crater or walking around Lahaina for a history lesson and culture fest. Hawaii’s Big Island, is vast enough to hold 11 of the world’s 13 climactic zones—from sandy beaches to snowcapped mountains. In Hilo, you’ll enjoy waterfalls, rainforests, and botanical gardens.  Why not snorkel, scuba, or fish off the Kona Coast? Just be sure to enjoy their world famous coffee while you’re at it.  Take a  visit to Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano in Hawaii Volcano’s National Park.

The moral of the story is that Hawaii has something for everyone. Plan your trip to any of the islands and you’ll be in store for the vacation of a lifetime where natural beauty is paramount and the people are friendly and inviting. Just be sure to pick me up a purple orchid lei on your way home.
