Welcome to Atlantic Canada

December 22, 2008

When you look back on your getaway to Atlantic Canada, the subtle feelings will stay with you always. You’ll remember your chats with the most friendly people, the gentle sea breeze through your hair, the taste of fresh lobster and the tranquil romance of neighborhoods where fishing, boat building and seafaring have been a way of life for centuries. Tour the scenic area of Atlantic Canada including New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island by hiking and biking long trails or sailing the coastline.

New Brunswick

There just aren’t enough minutes to experience all of the extraordinary moments of New Brunswick. Ever walked on the ocean floor? Glimpsed a rare North Atlantic right whale? Paddled by the light of a turn-of-the-century lighthouse? From the exhilarating four-story heights of the Bay of Fundy tides to the magnificent sand dunes of Bouctouche, New Brunswick is home to some of the most spectacular natural and man-made wonders in the Maritimes.

New Brunswick is also renowned for its lively cities, diverse outdoor adventure and eclectic blend of Aboriginal and Loyalist cultures. Add a dash of Acadian joie de vivre and you have a truly unique Maritime experience. So whether you want to enjoy alluring waters, charming covered bridges and picturesque towns while you dance the night away, or simply stroll under the vibrant fall leaves, it’s all really up to you.

Newfoundland and Labrador

St. John’s, the easternmost city on the continent, is the perfect place for a weekend getaway this fall. Get the work week out of your hair and relax with simple pleasures like a day at a spa, hiking, museum and art gallery visits, and first-class accommodations. There’s a chance to see late-season whales and migrating birds.

Up the tempo with a night on the town. St. John’s has one of the best music scenes with something for all tastes, from the symphony to hip-hop, and the food is as tasty as it is outrageously named. Cod cheek stew is every bit as good as garlic bacalao (salt cod) fritters, and Chablis is great with both. Let’s make that a long weekend.

Now, a little history. When Robert Peary reached the North Pole in 1909, one Newfoundland man did more than anyone else to get him there – an ice pilot named Bob Bartlett. In 2009, come celebrate Bartlett with a year of special events to remember this special man. See his house in Brigus, an hour outside of St. John’s.

Nova Scotia

Discover the Nova Scotia that you’ll come to know and love. Where cobblestones and cannons share a city center with right-this-minute cosmopolitan urban cool. Where stories of rum-running days are told around tables at the hippest restaurants in the country. It’s a place shaped by the sea, and a way of life shaped by four founding cultures. The music is unforgettable, the scenery is incomparable, the food is fantastic and the locals welcome you like family.

With over 4,700 miles of diverse coastline, you’re never far from the sea. Explore Halifax, the bustling seaport capital. Be charmed by Nova Scotia’s most photographed fishing village, Peggy’s Cove. Stand in awe of the world’s highest tides along the Bay of Fundy. Drive the spectacular coastal touring route, the Cabot Trail. Discover Old Town Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With the sea on all sides, no wonder the world sings the praises of Nova Scotia’s seafood – from salmon and lobster to succulent Digby scallops. Take a winery tour with a renowned sommelier and sample the award winning vintages.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is where tranquility lives. It’s small enough to always hold the promise of more, and it does. The landscape itself gently reminds you to slow down to enjoy the moment. To enjoy the beauty.

You have seen beautiful places – now let Prince Edward Island take your breath away. Gleaming lighthouses are perched on sandstone cliffs and fishing villages are huddled near bays and rivers, all cradled by gentle shore breezes and warm ocean waters. The countryside is populated with manicured farms, great blue herons and bald eagles.

Prince Edward Island is already famous for its seafood, but imagine how good the oysters and lobsters are when you eat them there. Famous not only for seafood, but as “the garden province,” you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables in abundance. Add a bottle of local wine or beer to your cuisine, a little fiddle music and that would be a day to savor.
