Don't Miss: The Sphinx, carved out of surrounding limestone bedrock in the third millennium B.C., is the largest single-stone statue in the world. After the area was abandoned, the Sphinx became buried in sand up to its shoulders. It largely remained that way until the first modern effort to dig out the statue began in 1817. The job was not completed until 1925.
